The Philadelphia and South Jersey region has limited access to intensive aphasia rehabilitation. Insight Speech and Swallowing Therapy is bringing an Intensive Aphasia Program to the area and is currently accepting applications
What is Intensive Aphasia Therapy?

Our Intensive Aphasia Program is a highly immersive and personalized rehabilitation
experience designed for individuals living with aphasia following stroke or other neurological injury.
Participants engage in a combination of individual therapy, group treatment, technology-based practice, and communication partner training, all grounded in the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA).
Intensive Aphasia Therapy occurs for 3 hours a day using a variety of treatment approaches. Our model pulls from the World Health Organization's International Classification of Function to target both impairment and the activity/participation level of language. We also target all areas of communication including speech, language, reading, and writing.
Participants benefit from direct access to specialized aphasia expertise and a consistent therapeutic approach throughout the program. Every aspect of treatment is individualized to support meaningful communication goals, whether returning to work, participating in family conversations, engaging in community activities, or increasing confidence in daily life.
Who Might Benefit?
Our program is designed for individuals living with aphasia following stroke or other neurological injury. Benefits in intensive aphasia programs have been seen in individuals with recent strokes (less than 6 months) through those greater than 7 years post-onset (Babbitt, Worrall, and Cherney, 2015). Benefits have also been seen across all aphasia severities from mild through severe.
The ideal candidate for our program is:
Medically stable
Able to tolerate 3 hours of therapy per day
Independent mobility or accompanied by a supportive caregiver
No other degenerative diseases (dementia, etc).

What an Intensive Day Looks Like
Our schedule includes two hours of individualized therapy and one hour of group therapy. During portions of the day, caregivers are invited to participate in individual sessions to learn supportive strategies as well as participate in caregiver support groups.
We have local partners to support physical, occupational, or mental health therapy needs and are happy to match you with additional supportive services in our community.
How Our Program Differs from Traditional Weekly Therapy
Unlike traditional therapy provided once or twice per week, this intensive model delivers concentrated treatment over several hours across several weeks to accelerate progress and maximize communication opportunities.
Additionally, following completion of the program, you are invited to continue in our Intensive Aphasia Program Graduate Communication group, a 60-minute group offered virtually.
Why Frequency and Intensity Matter
In considering the principles of neuroplasticity, frequency and intensity are two important components for improvements in overall functioning. In a research analysis of aphasia programs, the greatest improvement in language was observed in frequent, functionally tailored speech therapy. The Rehabilitation and Recovery of People with Aphasia after Stroke (RELEASE) Collaborators found the most gains in language and comprehension with 20 to 50 hours of speech therapy (2-9 speech therapy hours/week, 3-5 days/week). According to the RELEASE Collaborators, therapy gains were not seen in less than 3 hours of therapy/week and less than 3 days/week.
What is the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia
Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA) aims to enhance life participation and overall quality of life. LPAA considers personal goals, choices, and preferences as well as social connection in treatment goals. Rather than just making improvements in the therapy room on worksheets, LPAA aims for re-engagement in daily activities and supporting family members.
