What is dysphagia? 

Dysphagia is a medical term for difficulty or pain when swallowing food, liquids, medication, or saliva. Swallowing disorders involve the oral, pharyngeal, and/or esophageal phase.

Signs you may need

swallowing therapy:

  • Difficulty chewing

  • Coughing or throat clearing when eating

  • Complaints of pain when swallowing

  • Difficulty coordinating breathing and swallowing

  • History of aspiration pneumonia/respiratory infection and/or fever

  • Avoiding certain foods/drinks

  • Weight loss, malnutrition, or dehydration from not being able to eat enough
