Services Offered by Insight Speech and Swallowing Therapy

A brain injury's impact can vary depending on the severity and location of the injury. Speech therapy addresses:

Speech Production and Articulation:

  • People with brain injury may struggle with slurred speech or difficulty pronouncing words clearly. Speech therapy helps improve muscle control for articulation and teaches strategies to improve speech clarity for those with dysarthria.

Receptive Language:

  • Those with a brain injury can have difficulty understanding spoken or written language (receptive aphasia). Therapy can involve exercises to help improve the understanding of words, sentences, and more complex language structures.

Expressive Language:

  • Some individuals may have difficulty finding the right words, constructing sentences, or organizing their thoughts to communicate clearly (expressive aphasia). Speech therapists work on improving word recall, sentence structure, and the ability to express oneself.

Cognitive-Communication Skills:

  • A brain injury can impact attention, memory, problem-solving, and executive functions that are necessary for everyday communication. Speech therapy often includes exercises to improve attention span, memory retention, and problem-solving in a conversational context.

Swallowing and Feeding:

  • In some cases, brain injury can affect the ability to swallow properly (dysphagia). Speech therapists are trained to evaluate and treat swallowing disorders, ensuring safe eating and drinking.

Pragmatics (Social Communication):

  • Communication isn't just about speech but also about understanding social cues, turn-taking, and appropriate language use in different settings. Speech therapy may address these issues, helping individuals interact better with others.

Voice Disorders:

  • Changes in pitch, tone, or volume of voice can occur following a brain injury. Therapy helps address these changes and improve vocal quality for more effective communication.

Therapy Appoaches at Insight Speech and Swallowing Therapy

  • Techniques and Exercises: These might include drills for articulation, structured conversations, memory exercises, word retrieval activities, or using technological aids to assist with language recovery.

  • Family Involvement: Family members play an important role in the therapy process by providing support and helping the patient practice outside of sessions.
