How Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) enhances communication and progress in speech therapy for Adults?

At Insight Speech and Swallowing Therapy, we have seen how the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) improves communication and enhances the therapeutic process. October is AAC awareness month and we are sharing how we complete the evaluation process and incorporate AAC into enhancing speech therapy sessions.

Determining If AAC Is Right For You

Who might use AAC?

We specialized in the evaluato nand treatment of AAC devices for those with:

  • Aphasia

  • Apraxia

  • Autism

  • Developmental Disability

  • Dysarthria

  • Primary Progressive Aphasia

  • Traumatic Brain Injury

  • and other Neurologic Disorders including ALS, Parkinson’s Disease, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Huntington’s Disease or Muscular Dystrophy

Evaluation

An AAC evaluation is a comprehensive assessment process that begins with a speech-language evaluation aimed at identifying communication challenges an individual is facing. This process involves exploring a range of AAC options, starting from no or low-tech solutions such as picture board to more advanced high-tech devices like speech-generating devices or communication apps. The selection of the optimal AAC system is based on various factors, including the individual's unique communication needs, preferences, abilities, and goals. We carefully consider the individual's motor skills, cognitive abilities, language proficiency, and overall communication goals to ensure that the chosen AAC system effectively supports their communication and enhances their quality of life. Insight Speech and Swallowing Therapy provides comprehensive support throughout the evaluation process aiming to empower individuals with communication impairments to express themselves confidently and effectively in various settings.

Treatment

Following evaluation, treatment includes training on use of the chosen device and consistent follow-up to make any necessary adjustments. If using a high tech option, treatment includes programming your AAC device with personally relevant and importance messages/icons. We continually provide modification support as AAC communication is ever evolving. Treatment can also include use of your device therapeutically- Programming practice phrases and using your device to practice trained speech strategies such as Semantic Feature Analysis for aphasia.

Family and Caregiver Training

Introducing AAC options is a crucial step in helping individuals with communication challenges. It involves not only selecting the appropriate AAC tools but also providing comprehensive support and training to the family members and caregivers. This training is essential to ensure that the AAC device is effectively utilized beyond therapy sessions. Insight Speech and Swallowing Therapy recognizes the importance of extending support beyond conventional boundaries. By integrating therapy into home and community environments, we aim to create a seamless transition for individuals using AAC devices. This approach allows for a more holistic and practical application of communication strategies in real-life situations. By working closely with families and caregivers, Insight Speech and Swallowing Therapy can tailor their support to meet the specific needs of each individual and family using AAC. This personalized approach not only enhances the effectiveness of the therapy but also empowers those involved in the care of the individual to feel more confident and competent in supporting their communication need in everyday life. Family and caregivers reinforce the skills learned during therapy and promote consistent progress outside of sessions. This continuity of care is essential in maximizing the benefits of AAC options and promoting long-term success in communication development.
