Drawing a Blank? Improving and Maintaining Memory with Speech Therapy

Updated: Apr 3, 2024

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are essential in the screening, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals experiencing memory changes or diagnosed with dementia. The primary objective of treatment for dementia is to maintain quality of life for as long as possible. An SLP can assist individuals in remaining independent by working on attention, memory, problem-solving, and higher-level thinking skills.

In normal aging, forgetfulness may occur occasionally, but generally, the forgotten memory comes back. However, when memory changes begin to impact safety, it is no longer a normal part of aging.

When to consider Speech Therapy?

Speech therapy may be beneficial for individuals who are having difficulty with the following:

- Performing activities of daily living safely and efficiently

- Communicating effectively

- Paying attention to a conversation

- Staying on topic

- Remembering information

- Responding accurately

- Understanding jokes or metaphors

- Following directions

An assessment determines if and where impairments exist to help shape treatment goals. Treatment focuses on individual areas of impairment to promote independence in activities of daily living. The goal of intervention is to compensate for changes and ensure safety and meaningful interactions with family and caregivers. Treatment plans are personalized in frequency and length to enable clients to achieve their goals.

Family and caregivers play a crucial role as memory changes occur. One-on-one and group consultation and training are offered to caregivers and families, providing them with the skills to navigate daily interactions and communication effectively, while reducing caregiver burden.
