Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a serious condition that results from damage to the brain. It can lead to difficulties with speech, language, thinking, and swallowing. TBI often results from falls, car accidents, being hit by an object, sports-related injuries, and military combat injuries.

How Can Speech Therapy Help in Traumatic Brain Injury and Concussion Recovery?

A team of professionals is usually involved in the care of individuals who have experienced TBI. An SLP (Speech-Language Pathologist) can evaluate and test speech, language, thinking, and swallowing skills to determine the best course of treatment.

Speech therapy for TBI can address various difficulties, including:

- Clarity of speech (dysarthria)

- Difficulty controlling speech muscles (apraxia of speech)

- Understanding what others say or read

- Difficulty finding the right words to express oneself

- Attention during daily tasks and activities

- Problem-solving, planning, and organization skills

- Social skills, including reading social cues and taking turns in conversation

- Trouble chewing, coughing, and choking when eating

Speech therapy for PCS includes education, assessing cognitive domains such as attention, memory, processing speed, and language, identifying post-concussion symptoms

Mild TBI and Concussion Recovery

Individuals who experience mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) or concussions may experience symptoms that persist for days, weeks, or months. This condition is called post-concussive syndrome (PCS). Those experiencing PCS may find it difficult to return to school or work. Speech therapy for PCS includes education, assessing cognitive domains such as attention, memory, processing speed, and language, identifying post-concussion symptoms, and utilizing environmental or behavioral strategies. The goal of all treatment is to facilitate a successful return to activities of daily living, including school, work, and hobbies.
