The therapists at Insight Speech and Swallowing Therapy specialize in neurorehabilitation for speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing disorders. We offer outpatient speech neurorehab in the Cherry Hill and South Jersey area.
What is Neurorehabilitation?
Neurorehabilitation is specialized treatment for individuals diagnosed with neurological conditions including strokes, acquired brain injuries, movement disorders, or neurodegenerative conditions. Neurorehabilitation is often thought of as being multidisciplinary with a variety of specialists involved in care including physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, neurologists, and more. Speech therapy focuses on communication, cognition, and swallowing. Specifically, our goal is to provide person centered care that focuses on prioritizing patient/family goals including returning to work or school, maintaining independence, improving quality of life, or increasing social engagement.
What Disorders Do We Work With?
Stroke
Speech therapy following a stroke focuses on improving communicative effectiveness
whether that be in the area of speech articulation, speaking, listening, reading, or writing. Following a stroke, individuals may experience aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia, and/or dysphagia.

Aphasia is an acquired language disorder that can affect one’s ability to produce or
understand language. Individuals with aphasia may experience difficulty finding the words they want to say, understanding others, difficulty reading/writing, or difficulty communicating their thoughts or messages clearly.
Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder that affects speech production. Individuals with dysarthria may experience weakness, slurred speech, or consistent articulation errors.
Apraxia is a motor planning disorder that also affects speech production. Individuals with apraxia have difficulty planning and coordinating the movements required for speech, often leading to inconsistent articulation errors.
Dysphagia is a change in or difficulty swallowing. We are proudly trained in the McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program (MDTP). MDTP is a systematic swallowing rehabilitation program based on exercise physiology principles. The program was specifically designed for individuals with chronic dysphagia of greater than 6 months or those who have failed prior swallowing studies to return to eating and drinking. We have seen great success in returning clients to safely and successfully eating with MDTP.
Acquired Brain Injury/ Concussion
Acquired brain injury refers to any brain injury that occurs after birth. These can be classified as (1) traumatic or (2) non-traumatic. Traumatic brain injuries result from external trauma including falls, blows, or accidents. Non-traumatic brain injuries result from internal events like strokes, infections, or toxins. These can impact an individual’s cognition including their memory, attention, executive functioning or speech and language.
Concussions are mild traumatic brain injuries that can cause temporary changes in cognition including memory, attention, or executive functioning. While concussions are typically temporary injuries, repeated concussions can lead to more serious damage. Speech therapy can focus on improving one’s cognition, speech, or language through functional activities to return to school or work.

We are proud to have Katie Love, a Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS), at Insight Speech and Swallowing Therapy. As a CBIS, she is specially trained to work with individuals who have suffered brain injuries, offering targeted therapies that support cognitive, speech, and language recovery. As part of her CBIS training, Katie completed over 500 hours of training for Acquired brain injury (ABI) and diagnostic imaging, concussions and mTBI, military populations, brain injury in pediatrics and adolescents, aging with a brain injury, and participation and return to work.
Neurologic Conditions
We work with a variety of neurologic conditions at Insight Speech and Swallowing Therapy including Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Huntington’s Disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

Our therapists hold specialty training in LSVT LOUD® and SPEAK OUT® therapy programs. LSVT LOUD® is a program specifically designed for people with Parkinson’s disease and other neurologic conditions. The SPEAK OUT! Therapy Program, developed by Parkinson Voice Project, is a research evidence-based program helping individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s and related neurological disorders regain and retain their speech and swallowing. This comprehensive program combines individual speech therapy with education and ongoing group support.
Mild Cognitive Impairment/Dementia
Mild cognitive impairment refers to cognitive decline that has not yet
progressed to dementia. At this stage, individuals have the capacity to live independently, although may require tools or strategies to do so. Dementia refers to cognitive decline that impacts one’s ability to live independently.

There are several types of dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common cause. Other types include Lewy Body dementia, Vascular dementia, or Frontotemporal dementia. Speech therapy for these individuals focuses on maintaining safety, social engagement, and communication with their loved ones. Learn more on our recent blog from Kelli Humphrey, M.A. CF-SLP.
